Transparent and Structured Portfolio Management with Blue Ant

To manage a growing number of complex IT and digitalization projects, the Canton of Aargau introduced the multi-project management software Blue Ant. The goal was to replace an inflexible project list and establish a clear, unified structure for project oversight, portfolio transparency and resource planning.

The canton adopted a minimum viable product (MVP) approach, initially rolling out Blue Ant within Informatik Aargau before expanding to additional project types and departments. The implementation was carried out largely using the Blue Ant standard, ensuring long-term stability and scalability.

“Blue Ant offered exactly what we needed: a solution that fits our project culture and evolves with us,” explains Anja Piubellini, Head of the IT Project Management Office. “It’s easy to use, quick to deploy, and flexible enough to support our growing project maturity.”

Today, the Canton of Aargau uses Blue Ant for:

  Up-to-date visibility on project status, pipeline and priorities

  Gradual expansion to new project types and departments

A key success factor was the canton’s consistent change management approach. Training sessions were short, targeted and tailored to specific user groups. Regular planning workshops supported the introduction of resource management and helped maintain solid data quality.

As the visibility of project information increased through dashboards, internal interest grew rapidly. Within a short period, the number of users and project types expanded significantly. Today, more than 570 users work with Blue Ant – with additional departments preparing to adopt the system.

The Canton of Aargau now sees Blue Ant as the central foundation for modern, transparent and future-proof project and portfolio management.
